Going for the Golden Gloves

In Ardon Sweet Science Gym, Documentary work on February 21, 2010 at 2:00 pm

So it’s been almost a month since I first stepped foot into the boxing gym. My first goal was to “get” the speedbag and I think I can say I’m well on my way to fully getting that thing. I’ve been boxing and learning the moves. Man oh man do I feel spastic but everyone has been super nice and helpful. I met Angel as he prepares for the Golden Gloves competition here in Brooklyn and Eric who survived a knifing to make his life better only to find himself trying to teach me how to punch a nice hook. Here are some shots of Angel as he prepares for his fight on Monday Feb 22/10.

Ardon Sweet Science Gym

Today was a good day, I finally got the nerve up to pass through the rusted steel doors to the Ardon Sweet Science Boxing Gym. It is just up the road from my place and I had spotted it completely by accident about 6 months ago. I was walking to my favorite little chicken joint called La Parada on 4th ave in Sunset Park when I looked up and saw a pair of red boxing gloves. I could not for the life of me see an actual sign and I was not sure where the door was to get in. Time went on and though I did not forget about the place I just put it in the back of my mind. I was still very much working on The Clown project and the VFW project. So back to my story I walked up the stairs and into the gym and to be honest I was a bit surprised at how nice the gym was, I was expecting dingy and stinky but found good light and a pretty new looking ring. Turns out the place was only opened in 2004 by Greg Ardon. We spoke for a bit and I told him of my intentions of getting to know the guys and girls in the gym over a period of time and document them with my camera.  However somehow in all of that I also committed to joining the gym myself. So I’m going to start boxing but Greg assured me he would start me off like kindergarten. That seemed about right to me. So this will be the first project that I will actually use this blog to post new shots on. I’m sure these will not all be the “finals” but if I like em, they are going up. Enjoy….
